孟强: How to Identify a Valuable and Impactful Research Idea: Insights from Publishing a Highly Cited Article in a Top Transportation Research Journal

报告简介：

Generating a novel and impactful research idea is a critical skill for master students and exceptional undergraduates embarking on their academic journey. In this talk, Prof. Meng will share his insights on identifying innovative research ideas, drawing from his collaborative project with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich) titled “Studying Autonomous Vehicles Policies with Urban Planning of Toa Payoh in Singapore.”

Prof. Meng will discuss how the team identified a groundbreaking idea on electric vehicle (EV) charging facility planning, which culminated in the highly cited paper “A four-step method for electric-vehicle charging facility deployment in a dense city: An empirical study in Singapore,” published in Transportation Research Part A in 2019. This research introduced a practical four-step method for deploying normal and fast-charging stations to meet the charging demands of private EVs and both single-shift and dual-shift electric taxis in urban settings. The approach offers a straightforward and scalable procedure for estimating and distributing EV charging demand, demonstrating its real-world applicability and impact. Building on the methodologies and lessons from this work, Prof. Meng will also provide practical tips for students aspiring to excel as excellent postgraduate students.

报告人简介：

孟强，新加坡工程院院士、新加坡国立大学（NUS）土木与环境工程系（CEE）教授，并在NUS担任多个领导职务，包括NUS广州创新研究院院长和CEE交通研究中心（CTR）主任。孟教授的研究涵盖三个关键领域：城市出行建模与优化、航运与联运货运运输分析，以及交通运营的定量风险评估（QRA）。通过在这些领域的开创性工作，他已成为城市出行、海运运输和联运货运网络分析、建模与优化方面的领先权威。已在SCI期刊上发表论文260余篇，H指数为86，总引用次数达到20,827次。孟教授曾《Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review》联合主编，目前担任《 Transportation Research Part B: Methodological》和《Transportation Science》的副主编。孟教授还因其在这三个研究领域的突破性工作，获得了众多著名的研究奖项和荣誉，包括2023年斯坦福大学评选的全球前2%物流与交通领域科学家、2020年INFORMS交通科学与物流学会（TSL）货运与物流最佳论文奖、2019年第13届东亚交通学会国际会议OCDI竹内义男物流领域最佳论文奖以及2016年香港科技大学土木与环境工程系杰出校友奖等。
